If this film doesn’t break your heart and call you to action to do something to get involved (like write your Congressman), I think you will need to question if you have a heart. Visit PBS.org and check the schedule in your area.
There are an estimated 250,000 North Korean refugees living in China. Having escaped starvation and torture at the hands of the North Korean regime, refugees living in China must continue to fight for survival. The Chinese government systematically raids homes, train stations and even taxis looking for North Koreans who they categorize as illegal immigrants. Chinese citizens are rewarded for turning in North Koreans living silently among them.
North Korean agents also cross into China looking to capture and repatriate North Koreans for the “crime†of leaving their country. Defecting from North Korea is a capital offense, and repatriated refugees face human rights abuses ranging from concentration camps and torture to forced abortion and summary executions.
As a Christian, I watched this film and it made me angry and disappointed with my fellow man. It once again proved to me the fact that man at his very core is sinful. The pure wickedness of the Chinese and North Korean governments, as well as individuals who ignore right from wrong is unbelievable. For being such a highly educated people it’s amazing how evil the Chinese and North Korean governments are when it comes to human rights.
Can you imagine a child being killed, tortured or starved to death because their parents have elected to leave their country? If you watch this film you will see firsthand that God has given men and women free will. If the North Korean people didn’t have a free will they would not be exercising it to escape the crazy regime of North Korea. However, men will go to great lengths to violate the free will of others that has been granted as a gift by God for their own selfish interests.
That’s what is happening in North Korea and based on China’s athiestic model of government they have no problem turning their backs on these poor people. It’s been my experience that when people are not given value by being considered made in the image and likeness of Almighty God that they become nothing more than pond scum and of no value to their persecuters. This is what we are seeing play out in real life in North Korea and China.
SEOUL TRAIN is a gripping documentary exposé into the life-and-death struggle faced by North Korean refugees as they flee their homeland through China, which does not recognize their legal status as refugees. Combining verité and hidden camera footage with personal stories and interviews, the film brings to light this humanitarian tragedy of a neglected people risking—and often losing—their lives for freedom. You can find out when it will be shown on PBS.org and learn how you can get involved to support the effort to help free North Korea and provide assistance to struggling refugees.
I know that there are so many needs in the world today, but as people who have the luxury of living in a free society we owe it our fellowman to help set them free. It’s not a good idea, but our obligation. As I write this post, I think about the fact that if I were in North Korea right now the words that I have just written could have been my last. Isn’t it ironic that people who claim to be strong are so weak that they can’t handle the truth, but that the truth is what will actually set them free.
After the Rwandan genocide, the late U.S. Senator Paul Simon, Chair of the House Subcommittee on Africa, said, “If every member of the House and Senate had received 100 letters from people back home saying we have to do something about Rwanda, when the crisis was first developing, then I think the response would have been different.†Please write your congressman and voice your opinion on the North Korea genocide. See what the people of South Korea have done to voice their opinion on the matter.
