How To Study The Bible - By Watchman Nee

Over the past five weeks, I’ve been teaching a class on Sunday mornings at The Rock on “How To Study The Bible”. We’ve been going through a book by Watchman Nee that was written from a series of messages that he gave back in the 1948 and 1949.
I selected this book because it discusses one of the most important issues today relating to studying the Bible. The first half of the book discusses how you must be the right person to study the Bible and how just having the right methods is not the key to knowing God’s Word.
In Mark 12:24-25 Jesus made the following statment to the Sadducees concerning their questions on marriage in Heaven, Are you not therefore mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. He said this to men who spent their entire lives reading the Bible and yet they didn’t understand what they read. How can this be?
The Bible is a spiritual book and it has to be understood spiritually by spirtual men and women. You can’t understand God or His word with your mind, will and emotions because God is a Spirit and as Jesus explained, He must be worshipped in spirit and in truth. The way some people read the Bible today is outrageous!
As you will recall just a couple of years ago, all of the kooks who came out trying to tell us what the Bible taught about Christ’s death during Mel Gibson’s controversial movie The Passion of The Christ. I remember some of the statements that were being made and they might as well have been saying that the sky is green and grass is blue because they were spiritually blind to God’s word.
As Watchman Nee explains in this book, trying to understand the Bible without being born again by the Holy Spirit is like trying to get electricity into a lamp with bamboo and cloth rather than copper wire. He goes on to explain that trying to explain a mango tree to a blind person doesn’t mean that he will ever understand what a mango tree looks like because he can never experience it.
The same is true to people who read the Bible without being born again and having a regenerated spirit that is alive to God. It’s impossible for them to understand spiritual things because they are dead to God’s Word. Simply put, it’s a closed book to them in the same way that a blind man can never truly picture the mango tree no matter how much he tries to imagine it.
Many Christians and non-Christians are like the Pharisees and Sadducees of Jesus day. They are the blind leading the blind into a big ditch without realizing that they are going in the wrong direction.
This is a great book that can help many Christians to understand How to Study The Bible well. Many people study the Bible, but few people study the Bible well. Order this book and discover some of the keys to understanding how to become the right person and use the right methods to study the Bible. You won’t be disappointed.
